Default I got my first speeding ticket today...

I got my first speeding ticket today, I didn't realize I was speeding... It was early this morning about 8:15am. I was taking my car to the shop to get a brake job and I was traveling down Hwy 3 and 146, it was a section of the highway where they shared the same name, Speed Limit 50. Anyways, I needed to take Hwy 3 and at the fork in the road, Hwy 146 went off to the left and Hwy 3 went off to the right. After a few seconds I came over the bridge and on the other side was the City of LaMarque cop, I looked down and saw I was going slightly over 60. I have yet to see a Speed Limit sign since taking the Hwy 3 exit and once I passed him I noticed one up ahead and it said 50. I hadn't paid attention to the earlier speed limit signs, when I came back from getting my car serviced I doubled back to see where all the speed limit signs were. Trying to figure out where I went wrong. The cop that pulled me over said I was going 63 in a 50.

I have a question, why was there no speed limit sign once I exited onto the highway I needed? And why is the cop going to be between the exit and the first speed limit sign? I know he's probably trying to surprise you by hanging out on the other side of the bridge, so you won't have time to adjust your speed. Does the Speed Limit sign on the combined highway thoroughfare count for the exited roadways?

I'm trying to decide if I want to challenge the ticket or just take Defensive Driving.
