Default what is criminal law?

Substantive criminal law defines particular crimes, and procedural law establishes rules for the prosecution of crime. In the U.S., substantive criminal law originated for the most part in common law, which was later codified in federal and state statutes. Modern criminal law has been affected considerably by the social sciences, especially in the areas of sentencing, legal research, legislation, and rehabilitation. See also criminology.

The term criminal law, sometimes called penal law, refers to any of various bodies of rules in different jurisdictions whose common characteristic is the potential for unique and often severe impositions as punishment for failure to comply.
I hope it helps you to gain little bit about criminal law.

Criminal law is used all over the world to establish basic codes of conduct for citizens and as the basis of a legal system. Some lawyers specialize in criminal matters, whether they are prosecutors or defenders, and criminal law also lays the groundwork which allows police forces, courts, and other aspects of the legal system to function.
