Default the Rockefeller Drug Laws

Enacted in 1973 when Nelson Rockefeller was governor, the Rockefeller Drug Laws require harsh prison terms for the possession or sale of relatively small amounts of drugs.

There are over 18,300 drug ofenders in NY's prisons, most of them minor offenders with no history of violent behavior.

It costs NY nearly $590 million a year to imprison drug offenders.

93% of the people locked up in NY for drug offenses are African American or Latino, despite research showing that the majority of people who use and sell drugs are white.

Reasearch shows that drug treatment is cheaper than imprisonment and more successful in reducing drug related crime.

Moreover, repealing the Drug Laws would save the fiscally strapped state up to $245 million per year.

After 30 years, it is long past time to remove the stain of these wasteful, unjust, ineffective & racist laws from NY’s penal code.

Default Drugs, Races and Economics

There is no law that protects whites who break drug laws. Have you read about the Australian woman convicted last week in Bali?

No Latino or individual from any other race will benefit by laxity on drug laws.

The US economy has the resilience to bear some deficit to keep drugs off the streets. The cost of keeping offenders behind bars is eminently affordable and makes for sound economics.

One change that I could support would be to enact legislation that forces social service on drug offenders. They should be used for some manual tasks that cannot be mechanized or made to pay in some way for their keep, instead of lounging around in their cells and exercise yards.

I think that it's dumb to have any type of drug laws...it's like banning alcohol. It's not going to work, and really it's YOUR decision if you want to do this foshiznit or not. It shouldn't be anyone elses, IMO.

Exclamation Beware!

Alcohol in moderation does no harm. There are studies to indicate that an occasional glass of wine may have some therapeutic effect. Alcohol is an important medium of administration of homeopathic medicine to people with glucose intolerance. Wine is integral to some Western cultures. Prohibition in the 1930s did not work because it went against the basic grain of communities that had immigrated from lands where alcohol was weaved in to lifestyles. The Mafia flourished because of corruption in the Police force.
Now we are on another plane. Drugs have benefit only for those who are terminally ill and is available for them in the form of prescribed medicine. Its addictive power is deadly. Modern society does not endorse its use. It can make you haluucinate and lose control of your faculties in a flash. I do not know of a single case of a person who takes drugs and is able to live a normal life.
Afghans who lead the world in drug cultivation don't touch the stuff themselves!
