Default Son falsely accused of molesting a minor.HELP!

My son has been a friend and mentor to a disturbed teenage girl. She is a (step) family member.
She and my son were good friends, and she confided in him frequently about her problems (parents, peers, school, etc.) . She trusted him, and only him, to pour her heart out to.
He urged her to get counselling and she finally did, and was put on meds. But he remained her friend, listening to her whenever she needed to talk.
Last Aug., they had a spat....he had a girlfriend, and was helping me with some very intense matters ( my husband died). His life was changing and she was acting up...
A week or so after that he started getting crank calls on his cell ( 6 people have his number, and I'm sure his Dad or sisters were'nt doing it), obsecenities were scrawled in the dust of his car, at least once a week a car would drive by late at night, blaring it's horn, teenagers would drive by and scream filth at the house, etc.
Last Sat. night, he IM'ed her after another crank call, telling her to knock it off....and now, Thursday, I get a call from her mother telling me that the girl had told her counselor that my son had made love to her " in amazing detail". The counselor, of course, is mandated to report this.
My question is this...what can we expect ? Should we hire a lawyer now or wait until he is charged? Should he talk to the police if they come to the house or let them "take him downtown?"
He is extremely upset about this, because even though it is false, the reprocussions about a charge like this are tremendous...it is so unfair....
